Our Calabash Seafood Buffet also offers Mussels….what exactly is shellfish called mussels? The answer is pretty interesting and fascinating at the same time. Mussels are nature’s kind of marine clams. Like those shells that you often could find on a beach in a sand. They have a hard shell on outside, and very soft inside. And technically, mussel is a mollusk that lives in a water. Mollusk – like oysters, octopus, snails or clams. The scientific name for the group to which most mussels belong, called clams. These amazing creatures, is like live water filters. They move through themselves as much as eight to ten gallons of water per day, through their internal filtration system, just like a wet sponge. They constantly, non-stop pump water through them, just to feed and breathe. What they eat exactly, is a mystery for scientists, but it’s been known that mussels filter a lot of microorganism and even bacteria out of water. That is why this makes them very vulnerable to water pollution and ecosystem of Earth in general. How do mussels get around? They move slowly, just like snails, only because they have only one foot which they extend out of the shell. Once they have a foothold on ground, they pull themselves along. Usually they do stay very active through the entire day. But some are lazy, and comfortable to stay where they are at, and may spend their entire life in one place!!! Also, mussels are the longest lived mollusks on a planet. They reported to live more than 150 years. But most of them live from 10 to 50 years depending on the species and water quality. You can look at their growth lines outside the shell and count how many years it’s been living. Just like the rings on a tree.
